Letter: The 2nd Amendment

“I ask, Sir, what is the militia? It is the whole people. To disarm the people is the best and most effectual way to enslave them.” — Founding Father, George Mason, co-author of the Second Amendment.

The Second Amendment is the life blood of the American citizen’s Bill Of Rights; it is the foundation, the muscle and the rock upon which all the other rights are claimed and founded; it maintains clearly, and for all generations, that our rights were not handed to us by a government, but are the consequence of — and inherent to — a free and responsible citizenry.

I’m proud to be a life member of the National Rifle Association; I am among estimable company as such. Presidents Grant, Roosevelt, Truman, Kennedy, Johnson, and Reagan, among others; and celebrities, Ted Nugent, Bruce Willis, Gary Sinise, Chuck Norris; this is the company I keep with my membership.

Under the aegis of the Second Amendment, and pursuant to it, the NRA was founded in 1871; its charter specifically mandated the NRA to foster civilian marksmanship, and to train American citizens in the safe and effective use of firearms in all lawful pursuits. It has served this purpose admirably for individuals, and military and police personnel, from its founding to this day.

The founders of the NRA never imagined that one day it would have to raise a political voice. The “political arm” of the NRA espouses only one cause: The protection of the American citizen’s Bill Of Rights in general, and their right to “keep and bear arms” in particular, exactly as the founding fathers of our republic intended.

God bless the Republic, and confound its enemies both foreign and domestic.
