Announcing a change to the Remember When page

When many of you read the name “Shelby Ashline” in this newspaper, you might be most accustomed to thinking of the North County reporter, my role at the Greenfield Recorder for nearly two years. But for the past five months, I’ve been the features editor, overseeing the Arts & Culture and Life & Times sections, as well as the Wednesday Food page and the Monday Outdoors page.

But I’m not writing to you today to check in about my job. Rather, I’m writing to tell you about a change to the Remember When page and the features section as a whole.

Those of you checking this space are surely accustomed to seeing Gary Sanderson’s mugshot at the top, followed by the words “Native Insight.” Each week, Gary would write about a new archaeological discovery, a hypothesis he had formed or a new book he had read, most often relating to Native American history.

With Gary’s retirement on June 28, however, last Saturday’s edition of Native Insight will unfortunately be the last. His column will be greatly missed by many devoted readers, myself included, who appreciated Gary’s unique writing style as well as his intriguing topics. But after decades of hard work as sports editor, we wish Gary all the best in his well-deserved retirement.

Still, that of course leaves a hole on this page. Native Insight was a column carved out for Gary, and it’s difficult to think about anyone being able to take his place. It’s also difficult to think about what else might fit well on the Remember When page that would equally satisfy readers.

So in the next few weeks, I hope you will please bear with us as we make some changes. At the recommendation of Editor George Forcier, in the short-term, we will be moving the rest of the Remember When page content — the Times Past column, the Franklin County trivia, In the Display Case and Where in Franklin County? — to the Milestones page, the next reasonable location, which will temporarily be put on page C2. I receive positive feedback regarding all of these parts of the Remember When page, and want to make sure they continue if at all possible.

If there is extra space, we may use the additional page for wire stories, though there have often been fewer pages as of late. We also want to ensure the health page has its own room to breathe.

It is difficult to say how long it will be until the features pages are more set in stone. Please feel free to email me at features@recorder.com with any suggestions you have regarding the Remember When page or the features section as a whole. I want to ensure the Greenfield Recorder has meaningful and unique content for its readers, and am receptive to feasible ideas for improvements.
