Athol qualifies; Indians roll on

Athol High School is going dancing.

The Red Raiders scored 14 times in the fourth inning to rout Franklin County Technical School, 21-0, in independent softball action Saturday morning in Turners Falls.

Jordan Carey went 4-for-4 and drove in three runs for the Red Raiders (10-6), and Olivia Smith added four hits, including a triple, and three RBIs. Julia Salmond collected three hits and drove in three runs, while Lexi Hamlett and Kayla Robideau each added two hits and three RBIs. Ali Riddell picked up her first varsity hit and RBI in the win, and Amber Young drove in her first career varsity run with a bases-loaded walk.

Trisha Hazen earned the win with seven strikeouts and two walks in five innings. Hazen allowed just two hits.

Hailey Keene and Nicole Valeski each had one hit in the loss. Mykayla Coburn gave up four runs in three innings but left with an injury. Teagen Valeski came in and pitched the final two innings, walking seven.

Turners Falls 9, Mohawk 0 — Mackenzie Phillips struck out 14 in a three-hit shutout as Turners Falls High School defeated Mohawk Trail Regional High School, 9-0, in a Franklin County League softball game Sunday night at the Bourdeau Fields Complex in Turners Falls.

Turners Falls coach Gary Mullins, now in his 34th year of coaching, celebrated his 61st birthday with the win, and his team surprised him with a party after the game .

Mohawk eighth-grader Lindsey Wagner pitched well, striking out 13 and allowing nine hits and nine walks. Turners (16-2) was held scoreless through two innings but broke through with two in the third that set things in motion.

Dakota Smith-Porter and Morgan Ozdarski each finished with a single, double and one RBI, while Sam Peabody doubled and drove in a run. Tanisha Sanders added one hit and one RBI, and Jordan Meattey tripled.

Tasha Buntin, Leigh Shippee and Caitlyn Millet each had one hit for the Warriors.
