GREENFIELD — Law enforcement in Albany, New York, arrested a Greenfield man on a murder charge Tuesday after police found the body of an unidentified man inside an apartment on lower Chapman Street on Monday night.

Taaniel Herberger-Brown, 42, a former tenant of the apartment where the body was found, was arrested at Albany International Airport on Tuesday. It is unclear when he will be returned to Massachusetts for arraignment, according to Laurie Loisel, a spokesperson for the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office.

Greenfield Police were called to the apartment Monday afternoon after someone reported a foul odor coming from one of the apartments, according to Loisel. Upon entry, police found the man dead on the floor. No one else was present inside the apartment at the time.

Although Loisel said the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has yet to determine the exact cause of death or the identity of the man, investigators believe the death is a homicide.

Police tape could be seen blocking an area behind 92 Chapman St. on Tuesday afternoon as a Greenfield Police cruiser remained parked nearby. Multiple witnesses said they first saw police in the area at around 9 p.m. the night before.

The case remains under investigation by the Greenfield Police Department, the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit attached to the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office and the Massachusetts State Police Crime Scene Services Section.
