GREENFIELD — A 20-year Baystate Franklin Medical Center employee has been named the hospital’s new chief operating officer.

Gina Campbell — a 52-year-old Greenfield resident who most recently served as regional director of quality for both BFMC and Baystate Mary Lane Hospital in Ware — began her new post Monday.

While she will continue overseeing quality, she will also supervise other areas of the hospital — including clinical ancillary services (like radiology), support services (like housekeeping), food services and volunteer services.

Campbell said that all the departments have strong managers who oversee day-to-day operations. She knows those managers well, having worked alongside them during her past 10 years in the quality department.

“I’m really excited at this opportunity to lead leaders forward,” said Campbell, who added that throughout her career, she has loved being able to teach, mentor and coach staff.

She will also serve as the “go-to operations person” for Chuck Gijanto, hospital president for both BFMC and Baystate Mary Lane.

“I am pleased and excited to welcome Gina into her new role,” said Gijanto, in a prepared statement. “She is known by all of us for her energy level, dedication, organizational talent, and her commitment to the local community — all great attributes in a leader.”

Campbell began her career 31 years ago as a nurse at Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, D.C. After five years on the job, she served as the hospital’s nurse manager for six years.

When she moved to Greenfield as a newlywed in fall 1993, she started working at the Greenfield community hospital in a part-time nursing supervisor job of four days a month. She secured a full-time position the following fall, and during the next 19 years served in a number of administrative roles.

“First and foremost, I’m a nurse,” said Campbell. “I carry that with me everywhere I go and I try to keep the patients’ perspective.”

She plans to get to know staff by spending time in each department she will oversee, even if that means putting on scrubs or a uniform to learn firsthand the work they do, she said.

“I love community hospitals,” she said. “I love our smaller size and the fact that you know most people. I love that we can all know each other and see each other in the community as well ... and that you can make change here.”

Interested in health care since she was a child, Campbell followed in the footsteps of two older relatives and attended Georgetown University for nursing. While working at Sibley Memorial, she earned a master’s degree in nursing at Catholic University of America.

She lives just about a mile away from the hospital with her husband Will, and two children: Laura, 17, and Tyler, 15.

She is a secretary for the Four Rivers Charter Public School board of trustees, where her children attend. She is also on the board for the YMCA in Greenfield and is an active leader in Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts.
