Letter: Women’s sports

Hear, hear Christine, very well said! I don’t believe that we have become complacent regarding The Recorder’s failure to cover women sports. I think we have grown to understand that there is no interest in covering women sports from this little newspaper. My subscription to The Boston Globe keeps me well informed and the option to go to Hartford Courant, Boston Herald and any other number of newspapers certainly augments the stunning lack of caring shown by this paper. However, I must commend whomever reported on the Frontier women’s track meet in yesterday’s paper that young Ms. Ferry even got a mention for her amazing feat!

During the 1970s, I had the opportunity to coach a number of years as an assistant at the high school. Those are some of the fondest memories of my life and those athletes among some of the most amazing human beings I ever hope to meet. Included among them were one of the best young golfers in western Mass. from a family of golfers whose name is still known on the local links, a young woman who was possibly one of the first through hikers of the Appalachian trails from south to north at approximately the age of 16 and who is today an accomplished author.

Then it was regularly accepted that the coach would call Steve Smith to report the findings. Basketball, softball, volleyball track and field the in-depth reporting in the 1970s and early ’80s was certainly far better than what we see today.

Perhaps if we just returned to the days when the coach just called in results to the sports desk in the late afternoon/early evenings, women would be far ahead of the game (as well as men who follow “the minor sports” and like UConn women’s basketball).

Then, too, we would have to return to the days when Ralph Collins dominated the gymnasium an athletic fields of Franklin County, and when Vi Goodnow stood tall along the sidelines. Certainly there cannot be very much interest here in the Pioneer Valley for something as far removed as what’s going on on the Storrs campus could there be?
