Area man charged with strangling girlfriend

GREENFIELD — A Sunderland man is free pending trial on charges that he strangled his girlfriend.

State police detained Matthew Collaro, 24, of 248 Amherst Road, Apt. M12, early Sunday morning in Buckland after Sunderland police responded to a call from his girlfriend at 12:50 a.m. reporting her bi-polar boyfriend was out of control, according to the Sunderland police report.

On Monday, Collaro pleaded not guilty in Greenfield District Court to two charges of assault and battery and one of attempted murder.

The alleged victim told police Collaro bit her cheek, choked her and spat in her face after reading text messages on her phone between herself and friends expressing how much they missed each other.

Following his arrest, Collaro told police he was being abused, showing fingernail scratches his girlfriend had told police she had inflicted while defending herself, according to officer Peter Scoble’s report.

Judge William Mazanec ordered Collaro released with the conditions that he stay 100 feet away from the accuser and take his medications as prescribed.
