Proposed Rowe school budget sees 2.5% hike

ROWE — The School Committee is seeking an overall 2.5 percent budget increase for the school year that begins next fall, and a public hearing on the budget request will be held Thursday, at 6:30 p.m. in Town Hall.

The draft budget, of $1,454,600, represents a $35,455 increase over this year’s school budget. It includes a kindergarten through Grade 6 budget of $1,158,458 and a secondary-level budget for Mohawk Trail Regional and Franklin County Technical school students of $418,450. The secondary school budget component represents a $15,949 decrease from the current fiscal year budget, while the elementary budget increased by $21,134.

The draft budget also includes $41,552 in contingency funds, in case the new Rowe Elementary School building is not ready for students at the start of the new year, and the Rowe School needs to start the school year at the Hawlemont Regional School, in classrooms that Rowe has been leasing since the August 2012 school fire in Rowe. This money is to cover Hawlemont building rental and bus transportation.

The Board of Selectmen will be meeting Thursday at 5:30 p.m., to go over the school budget, according to the town’s website.
