Reinig keeps Orange selectman post

ORANGE — Kathy Reinig was elected for a second term with 266 votes and a sizeable lead over former selectman Richard Sheridan, who got 212 votes. Bill Cody, a newcomer to town politics, got 168 votes.

Reinig thanked voters “for your support and continued faith — we’re going to be working very hard over the next three years to continue the progress we’ve been making.”

She also thanked voters for turning out to the polls as “voting is important and elections matter.”

Town Clerk Nancy Blackmer said the 16 percent turnout of registered voters was slightly lower than it has been in past several town elections. Despite lackluster participation, “The voters have spoken and voted in who they wanted,” said Sheridan.

Reinig has been a board member since 2011 and has served as chairwoman since March.

The past three years have been tumultuous ones for Orange.

In Reinig’s first year in office, the town struggled to shave a deficit of over half a million dollars. Deep and painful budget cuts resulted in layoffs and reduced town services and when the former town administrator retired in the midst of the budget crises, selectmen were forced to be more involved than usual with town operations until the position was filled by Diana Schindler last fall.

Throughout her campaign this year, Reinig has emphasized the need to bring new business opportunities into town to ensure the growth and stabilization of town finances.

Reinig owns and operates K.J. Reinig Associates, a small data-analysis business. She said her skills in data analysis are useful in understanding and helping others understand town finances.

Reinig moved to Orange in 2000 after deciding the rural and friendly community was the ideal place to set down roots.

Before starting her business, Reinig attended Dartmouth College for four years. While she completed all her coursework, she was unable to graduate due to chronic illness, which prevented her from completing her honors thesis.
