Greenfield man dies after jumping from downtown building

GREENFIELD — A local man has died of injuries from jumping off a fourth-floor fire escape.

The 51-year-old man, whom police have declined to identify, jumped from a fire escape on the rear of an apartment building on Chapman Street Wednesday night, according to Detective Lt. Daniel McCarthy.

Police and emergency medical technicians were called at 9:57 p.m., after a witness saw the man jump from the building, according to police.

The man, who had lived on the streets of Greenfield, was staying in the apartment building before his apparent suicide, said McCarthy.

The lieutenant said the man had a long-standing drinking problem. There was no note found on the man, and none of his associates reported any indication that he may have been suicidal, said McCarthy.

McCarthy said the man was alive when police responded, and was taken to Baystate Franklin Medical Center. From there, he said, the man was taken by helicopter ambulance to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield. McCarthy said the man died either on arrival or en route to the Springfield hospital.
