New playground to be installed at Academy of Early Learning
GREENFIELD — A new playground will be installed Saturday and Sunday at the Academy of Early Leaning, and the town is looking for volunteers to help from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day to save on installation costs.
Christy Moore, the town’s recreation director, said the town will hold a “community build” like the one it held at Beacon Field about a year ago.
“We’re looking for adults and teens,” she said. “We’re asking that people not bring children, because it will be too dangerous for them.”
Moore said people can register to volunteer at: http://vols.pt/z4BUit.
“We’re planning on having morning and afternoon shifts,” said Moore.
The town used a $15,000 grant and provided the other $32,000 to buy the equipment for the $47,000 playground, which includes equipment, benches, and wood chips.
Moore said a certified installer will be there overseeing the work.
“We want to do as much of the work as possible, so we can save money,” said Moore.
The town’s Department of Public Works tore down the old playground, which Moore said was old and dilapidated.
“The DPW also prepped the site,” she said. “We didn’t have to hire anyone to do that sort of work.”
The town received the grant as a result of being designated a “Playful City USA” last year by KaBoom, a national nonprofit that envisions a great place to play within walking distance of every child in America.
Moore said she will apply for the designation again this year and hopes that with a renewed designation will come more grants.
