GCC to take part in global anti-violence event today

GREENFIELD — Greenfield Community College will host an anti-violence event this afternoon, as part of “One Billion Rising,” a global movement to end violence against women and girls.

Organized gatherings, “flash mobs” and dance events are scheduled to occur all across the globe today.

At GCC, students and community members, male and female, are invited to gather for dancing and motivational readings at 12:30 p.m. in the dining commons.

“We were moved by the mission of this event,” said Shannon Coskran, an academic adviser. “We know that being a part of this global event will energize our community in getting involved and to create awareness and solidarity.”

The event will feature videos, music and monologues created by the global event organizers, including Eve Ensler, the author of “The Vagina Monologues.”

Attendees will be able to learn how to get more involved with the anti-violence effort, said Coskran.

The event is free and refreshments will be served.
