Letter: Our flag: Old Glory

What’s Old Glory look like?

I was trying to think if one could draw our flag from memory. It flies over our high schools, fire departments, police departments, our town halls. We see it in parades.

Our United States flag has 13 stripes, all the same width. The blue banner on the left top, with 50 stars, makes seven stripes short and six stripes long. Since the outside stripes are red, and the colors are alternately red and white, the stripe under the banner is white.

There is a star for each state. The last two added were Alaska and Hawaii in 1959, when Dwight Eisenhower was president.

The 13 stripes are for the 13 original colonies that formed the USA in 1787: Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia, Connecticut, Massachusetts (sixth), Maryland, South Carolina, New Hampshire, Virginia, New York, North Carolina and Rhode Island.
