GREENFIELD — It appears something is happening involving employees at the more than 50-year-old J.H. Smith Co., but what is not yet clear.
While officials at Franklin-Hampshire Career Center at One Arch Place have confirmed the center and its Rapid Response program have been working with the local company located at 330 Chapman St., they will not say why.
Multiple phone calls to J.H. Smith President David Dunn have gone unanswered. He cannot be reached for comment, though a woman who answered the company’s phone on Tuesday said he was in his office.
The career center works with new companies looking to hire, as well as those that are expanding and wish to do the same. But it also works with companies that are downsizing or closing.
The center’s Rapid Response program works to help place employees of existing companies that are closing and helps expanding companies find the help they seek.
It was not immediately clear how many people work at Smith.
The manufacturing and importing business works with mail-order businesses and retailers across the country to provide specialty items for home, vehicles, pets, garden and more — everything from decorations to magnetic vent covers, snow rakes, greeting card trees, heating mats for cats and book holders.
