Bus burns in FRTA garage fire
GREENFIELD — A bus was destroyed, but no one hurt, when a fire broke out in the Franklin Regional Transit Authority garage Tuesday night.
Greenfield firefighters responded to the Deerfield Street garage at about 5:45 p.m. Tuesday, to find a bus engulfed in flames inside the garage.
The bus, valued at $300,000, was a total loss, according to Deputy Fire Chief Edward Jarvis, and damage to the building are estimated at $35,000.
The fire was extinguished in less than an hour. Jarvis said the fire was contained to one bus, though another parked next to it suffered cosmetic damage.
Jarvis said the building and electrical inspectors were called to the garage Tuesday night to evaluate damage to the building.
Firefighters from the Bernardston and Turners Falls departments assisted on scene, and Deerfield firefighters manned the Greenfield station during the fire.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Greenfield Fire Department and the state fire marshal.
