Montague woman ID’d in deadly crash
DEERFIELD — The Northwestern District Attorney’s Office has identified the woman killed in Monday’s head-on collision on River Road as Celia A. Allen, 83, of Montague.
Allen was pronounced dead at the scene.
The other driver, identified as Aaron W. Stark, 19, of South Deerfield, was taken to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield with nonlife-threatening injuries. The hospital listed Stark in fair condition Tuesday afternoon.
Allen was lately a resident of Randall Wood Drive, and a former resident of Greenfield.
Newspaper archives show Allen as a crafter and baker whose cakes, cookies and candy took ribbons at the Franklin County Fair, and a fan of the local flora who was thrilled to find wild pink lady slippers on her land in 2006 and shared pictures with the county through Irmarie Jones’ Just Plain Neighbors column.
A 1948 Greenfield High School graduate, Allen worked locally as a real estate agent after 20 years following her Air Force husband Edwin O. “Sonny” Allen’s career around the country and the world.
There was no word from the district attorney’s office on the cause of the accident, under investigation by the state police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, the Deerfield Police Department and state police detectives attached to the district attorney’s office.
A Chevrolet Prizm driven by Allen and a Chevrolet Impala driven by Stark, neither with any passengers, collided around 3:06 p.m., according to police.
The accident occurred on a smoothly paved, clearly lined curve in the road just south of 520 River Road, before the Keith Cross Road junction.
Skid marks in the road led from the southbound lane directly to Stark’s car, suggesting he had some reason to leave his lane and applied the brakes hard while doing so. Allen’s vehicle was not readily visible half an hour after the accident, and the sequence of events awaits the conclusion of the investigation.
