Lower Road in Deerfield closed
DEERFIELD — Motorists using Lower Road will have to find another route as the state Department of Transportation demolishes part of the Interstate 91 bridge that crosses over the local road in West Deerfield near the Greenfield town line.
The road will be closed at the Interstate 91 overpass until Thursday from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. as the state demolishes the existing southbound bridge in anticipation of constructing a new span over the Deerfield River.
The work is part of the $40,229,983 project that started in June 2012 and will knock down and replace the bridges that carry the highway across the river at Stillwater. J.F. White Contracting Company of Westfield is the contractor. According to the state, the existing bridges are structurally deficient, but safe.
The state already switched southbound traffic onto a new temporary bridge last week.
