Senior housing options is topic for Wednesday ‘cafe’

BUCKLAND — The Council on Aging will host a “Conversation Cafe” to discuss senior housing options — what’s available now, and what the future will hold.

The discussion takes place Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. in the Senior Center in Shelburne Falls. For more information, call Ellen Eller at 625-9933.

Recreation plan study funded

BUCKLAND — Special town meeting voters agreed to spend $10,000 to pay for an engineering study and master plan for the Buckland Recreation Area. They also cleared up an unpaid $2,084 emergency management expense from last year.

Selectmen end obsolete positions

BUCKLAND — Selectmen said goodbye to some appointed town positions that were more important to 19th-century Buckland than they are today.

The town will no longer have a “field driver,” who was called on to help farmers retrieve cattle and livestock that had escaped through a broken fence. Also gone is the “fence viewer,” who traditionally responded to neighbors’ disputes over property values. Buckland’s last field viewer moved away and has not been replaced.

“Fence viewers no longer have any legal authority,” said Town Coordinator Andrea Llamas. “Many towns are dropping these two positions. And if we ever want them back, we can recreate them,” she told selectmen.

The board voted to end the positions. “It’s the end of an era,” Llamas said.

Applications for arts funding due Oct. 15

COLRAIN — The town’s Cultural Council is now accepting grant applications from schools, organizations and individuals for community-oriented arts, humanities and science programs. Applications for workshops, lectures, exhibits, concerts, science education and art projects that benefit the community are welcome.

The council is part of a network of 329 local councils that serve each town and city in Massachusetts. The state Legislature provides an annual appropriation to the state Cultural Council, which allocates funds to local groups. Applications are available online at: www.massachusettsculturalcouncil.org/application

Applications must be postmarked by Oct. 15. They should be mailed to: Colrain Cultural Council, P.O. Box 2, Colrain, MA 01340.

Moore appointed to rec. commission

BUCKLAND — Greenfield Recreation Director and Buckland resident Christy Moore has been appointed to fill an unexpired term on the town’s Recreation Commission.

Consolo, Riggan appointed

BUCKLAND — Selectmen appointed two more members to its newly formed Internet Access Advisory Committee: Finance Committee member Paula Consolo and John “Rob” Riggan, former president of Falls Cable TV.
