Phony sites a problem, as RMV updates its computer systems

Massachusetts drivers seeking to renew their licenses online could fall prey to phony sites that extract fees.

“We’ve got a problem with mimic sites,” Registrar Rachel Kaprielian told the state Transportation Board Wednesday. She said, “Our advice is not to Google Mass RMV or Mass DMV.”

The RMV is updating its computer system using Deloitte, a contractor that has faced some criticism for other computer system work it has done for state agencies, and Kaprielian said the company is aware and meeting with Registry of Motor Vehicles officials every two weeks.

“Failure is not an option,” Secretary of Transportation Richard Davey said. Kaprielian said the agency will also pilot a kiosk program next spring at a new RMV flagship branch. “The question is: what do we want the kiosks to do?” Kaprielian said, mentioning the possibility of license photos being handled by the automated kiosks, which could be placed in busy areas outside of RMV branches.
