Charity Lot Forest hike today

BERNARDSTON — A local man is crafting a plan for a town-owned forest, and he needs your help.

John Lepore, owner of Future Lands Design, was hired by the town this year to create a recreation and conservation plan for the Charity Lot Forest, which was donated to the town in the 1830s.

He’s walked the land off Bald Mountain Road several times, plotting trails, taking pictures and noting its features, attractions and sensitive areas. He held a public forum earlier this month, where 13 residents shared their ideas and concerns.

Now, he says, it’s time for them to take a hike.

Lepore will lead a hiking tour of the property from 9 to 11 a.m. today. Those who would like to join him should meet at the trailhead on Bald Mountain Road with a sturdy pair of shoes.

The size of the lot is between 78 and 99 acres, depending on the source. Lepore works with state GIS maps that put the parcel at 84 acres. A recently approved survey will clear up the boundary dispute.

Once all of his homework is done, Lepore will come up with two different plans for the property and present them to residents at an upcoming workshop.
