YMCA offers Baby Boomers & Beyond Week of activities
GREENFIELD — The YMCA is offering its Baby Boomers & Beyond Week from today through Nov. 4. Each day there will be wellness activities, social games and special events designed for those 50 and older. In addition, there will be free use of all Y Silver Membership amenities like cardio machines, strength training and more than 60 free Group Exercise or Water Fitness classes offered during the week.
Dawn Dorsey, Y health and wellness director, said “Almost every day we see news articles about how exercise is medicine for the body and the brain, especially for boomers and beyond. In order for people ages 50 and over to live active, enjoyable lives and independently as long as possible, they must strength train and exercise on a regular basis. Walking is a good way to begin or supplement a wellness program but, without strength training people continue to lose muscle mass (about 1 to 2 percent) and physical capabilities every year. This loss of muscle is what makes people feel old. One of our Y’s specialties is offering graduated group exercise options, from chair fitness and yoga, to “Group Power” or “Group Step,” which are all included in a Y membership. Another specialty is providing free instruction and support in our strength and cardio areas for all new exercisers during their first twelve months of membership to help people develop an exercise habit.”
Jayne Trosin, Y fitness Director, said Baby Boomers and Beyond Week has free activities planned every day like blood pressure checks Monday through Friday from 9 to 11 a.m., bingo on Tuesday and Thursday from 10 to 11:30 a.m., pickleball on Tuesday and Thursday from 9 to 11 a.m., an eight-ball and ping-pong tournament on Monday starting at 9:30 a.m. and a chess tournament on Friday starting at 10 a.m. Today, there will be a pot-luck luncheon with presenters from the Community Health Center talking about the Crucial Catch Project, a breast cancer screening program. On Wednesday, there will be free functional fitness assessments for those 60 and over from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Also included will be a fitness fair with Poet Seat Health Care Center doing balance testing, audiologist Lisa Alber doing hearing tests, and Baystate FMC doing mental health screenings as well as bringing their traveling bone density machine. In addition, other agencies that help the elderly will be here.
