Turners Falls native on his own in the oil business

TURNERS FALLS — After almost three decades in the oil heating business, as a technician and salesman, Turners Falls native Mark Letourneau is striking out on his own.

Letourneau has bought the tools and materials he needs to go into business, found his first employee and all that remained last week was for the Letourneau Heating name to be applied to his new, used work van.

“It was time to make a change; I left a company I’ve been with for 27 years,” he said.

Letourneau found a former co-worker, Brian Bompastore, who has 11 years’ experience in the industry but presently splits his time between landscaping and heating work.

Together they plan to offer full oil furnace and boiler service, from installation and removal to repairs and preventative maintenance.

Letourneau expects maintenance and repair to be the bulk of the business, with time to show the small business difference.

“When people don’t have heat they’re upset, they’re concerned,” Bompastore said. “Their first thought is a pipe is going to burst.”

This is when the ability and willingness to reassure people is important, he said, and both said they used to have customers who asked for them personally when something went wrong because of this, and it’s the ethos they plan to bring to the startup.

When he moved into sales Letourneau said sending the bill used to bother him due to the sheer cost of the work, especially as the price of materials increased every year, but he eventually adjusted to it because he was charging what the work was worth.

Both Bompastore and Letourneau are licensed for the work, and on the business side of things Letourneau brings his experience in sales.

With a small business and less overhead — his home is his office — he expects to be able to charge less, and looks forward to doing business the way he thinks it should be done.

Letourneau can be reached at 413-863-2020.
