Central Appliance closing in Greenfield

GREENFIELD — The owner of Central Appliance Inc. has decided to close his Greenfield store after just one year on Federal Street.

Darryl Belval said he made the decision to close the store that has been located in Greenfield for more than 30 years for a couple of reasons.

First, his ex-wife, who was running the Greenfield store for him, decided to retire.

“I have two other Central Appliance stores in Vermont and a couple of other businesses I’m running,” said Belval. “I can’t be everywhere at once.”

“I also decided it was time to consolidate,” he said. “I can offer people better deals if they come to the Brattleboro (Vt.) store.”

Belval said Central Appliance’s doors will close for good in Greenfield at the end of the month.

Robbie Cohn, owner of Cohn & Co. Real Estate Agency on Main Street in Greenfield and the building at 50 Federal St., said he hopes to find someone to lease the 2,800-square-foot space with a full basement.

He said Central Appliance had a five-year lease with him and said he got almost no notice about the closing.

“I just found out,” said Cohn, who said he and Belval will have to figure out what will happen.

Belval said one of his service technician lives in Greenfield and will continue to repair appliances in the Franklin County area. He said he also plans to hire a second service technician to serve the area.

He said people will have to go to 55 Marlborough Road (Route 9) in Brattleboro (off Exit 2) to visit Central Appliance. He also owns a store in West Dover.

“By consolidating, I’m able to cut my inventory in half, but can still take care of all of my customers and more,” he said.

Belval opened Central Appliance in Wilmington, Vt. in 1981 and a short time later opened a second store on Wells Street in Greenfield. He later moved the Greenfield store to another location on Wells Street. He moved the store to the west end of Main Street in 2000, and last year, he moved the store to Federal Street. The Wilmington store moved to West Dover a couple of years ago.

Belval said some issues, like what will happen to the few employees of his Greenfield store, are still being discussed.
