GREENFIELD — Volunteers will gather on Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. in the Energy Park for its annual spring cleanup.
Organizers are asking lovers of the park, and others, of all ages to join the effort.
Some tools will be provided, but volunteers should bring their favorite gloves, clippers, rakes and buckets.
Organizers will give tours of the native plants in the park, if asked.
“Spring is a special time in New England, and I enjoy celebrating its coming by joining with others to greet new spring shoots,” said Helga Meehleder, a longtime, self-proclaimed “greenthumber,” who has regularly participated in the annual cleanup. “I love preparing for the summer community concerts, which are made special by being in such a beautiful park.”
Greenfield Energy Park will launch its 12th season this year. The park has become a well-known summer entertainment venue with its free Coop Concerts on Thursdays, special weekend folk rock and classical music concerts, and the many other community celebrations it hosts.
The park is also known for its educational displays and unique native plants, as well as its butterfly garden, none of which need summer watering or fertilizer.
Those leading the cleanup said the plantings throughout the park can never be 100 percent native, but said the good news is that the park attracts native bees and butterflies.
The native plants throughout the park were donated by New England Wildflower Society’s Nasami Farm. Other plants, as well as the children’s train, were made possible by the local Kiwanis Club and the donations of many individuals.
Greenfield Energy Park is maintained by volunteers, the town’s Department of Public Works and Greenfield’s Parks and Recreation Department.
