Now is a good time to buy flood insurance
BOSTON — Experiencing a flood is always traumatic — and even more so when you have no insurance to pay for repairs and reconstruction.
While some homes are more vulnerable to floods than others, there is no entirely safe ground.
And so the Federal Emergency Management Agency, FEMA, is urging all New Englanders to protect their future from the threat of flooding by considering purchasing flood insurance — the key to flood recovery.
The fact is that homeowners’ insurance usually doesn’t cover flood damage ... only insurance from the National Flood Insurance Program offers coverage.
And even an inch or two of water in your home can leave damage that costs thousands of dollars to repair.
Spring has just begun, and that often means flooding in New England.
Don’t think you’re safe if you live in an area considered to be low risk. FEMA’s statistics show that almost one-third of flood insurance claims come from areas with lower risk.
Now is an excellent time to purchase flood protection, since there is a 30-day waiting period from the time you buy the policy until it can take effect.
