Recorder/Paul Franz To remove the driver rescue personel cut away the roof of this car that slid sideways into a utility pole, cracking it, on Rt 5&10 in Deerfield near Williams Sugar House on Monday evening.

DEERFIELD — An accident reported shortly before 4:30 p.m. Monday sent two Whately teenagers to the hospital, according to police, and closed Routes 5 and 10 for a time.

Deerfield Police Sgt. Michael Krusiewski said according to a witness the car was southbound on Routes 5 and 10 when the driver lost control in the snow.

The silver 1997 Pontiac sedan struck a utility pole across from Richardson’s Candy Kitchen, 500 Greenfield Road, crumpling the driver’s side of the car and cracking the pole. Krusiewski said the Jaws of Life were used to extricate the driver.

Driver Emilie Cycz of Old State Road and passenger Brooke Matuszko of Egypt Road, both 17, were transported by ambulance to Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield, where Matuszko was treated and released by 8:20 p.m. Cycz was still being evaluated at press time, according to a hospital spokesperson.

Western Massachusetts Electric Co. workers were on scene with Deerfield police and the Old Deerfield Fire Department, and Krusiewski said the road would not be reopened until the pole was fixed. Traffic was detoured along Wapping Road.
