Bingo at the Shelburne Grange hall?

SHELBURNE — Members of the First Congregational Church in Shelburne Center are considering hosting bingo games at Fellowship Hall, also known as the Shelburne Grange, on Little Mohawk Road.

In a letter to selectmen, church member James Stacy said that the state Lottery Commission requires that the town approve the proposal, along with the police chief.

Stacy said he would be the director and Alan Coutinho would be the treasurer.

“There will be eight to 10 church members that will work at each session,” he said. “We intend to make available a light meal, snacks and drinks. The town will get an annual report … that will include gross sales expenses and monies paid out,” Couthino said.

Stacy said he hoped to be at the selectmen’s meeting when the proposal is discussed.

Selectmen agreed to ask the church’s executive committee to make a formal request.

Selectman Robert Manners said he would have to abstain from any decision, because his wife works for the church.

Selectmen’s Chairman Joseph Judd is a church member and Selectman John Payne is affiliated with the church.

However, since neither of them stand to profit from any decision about this, they believe they would be able to vote on such a plan.
