SHELBURNE FALLS — Several years ago, town officials considered closing the drafty, underused Cowell Gymnasium in the winter, to save on heating costs. But the idea raised an outcry from residents and senior citizens, who had fond memories of going to the Cowell for Arms Academy gym classes and, as adults, for basketball and volleyball games.

Today, it’s not just nostalgia that brings people to the newly renovated Cowell Gym. It’s the offering of new fitness classes from the Greenfield YMCA, the schedule of winter indoor morning fitness walks, youth and adult basketball and evening adult volleyball classes.

Instead of closing the old gym, the town has spent $221,794 in combined town money and energy grants to replace the roof, insulate the gym interior and fix mold and drainage problems on the lowest floor.

Morning fitness classes offered through the YMCA are currently running through December on a trial basis, to encourage more West County residents to join the YMCA. They are offered from 9 to 10 a.m. on Tuesday and Thursday. A kick-box-style Y aerobics class is offered Monday night from 6 to 7, and 9 a.m. on Saturday morning. All Y classes are free to members; $5 for nonmembers, and open on a drop-in basis. (Bring clean gym shoes for the newly refurbished floor.)

Halloween

A Halloween Ball will be held at the Cowell on Saturday from 7:30 to 11:30 p.m. Wear a costume and dance to the music of DJ Ron. Admission is $5, and will be used to benefit the Cowell Gymnasium. All children under age 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Starting in November, senior citizens may come to the Cowell for fitness walks, from 9 to 10 a.m., on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays through March.

In December, the Academy at Charlemont will use the gymnasium for physical education classes Monday through Thursday, at 3:30 p.m. Youth Basketball also starts in December, from Monday through Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

More times are available for other fitness programs to be offered at the gym. Also, the Cowell Gymnasium’s Facebook page posts some occasional events, such as a recent “rainy day” opening of the gym for after-school activities.

For more information, call the gym at 625-0305.
