Senior Health Fair set for Oct. 18 at YMCA

GREENFIELD — Baystate Franklin Medical Center and the YMCA of Greenfield will hold a Senior Health Fair and Functional Fitness Assessment Oct. 18, from 9 a.m. to noon, in the YMCA gymnasium. The event is for individuals 60 and older and features a variety of screenings, fitness assessments, information stations and healing modalities to explore.

Both the Y and the hospital have held senior health fairs in the past, but this will be the first year the two organizations are partnering.

Jayne Trosin, fitness director at the YMCA noted, “This annual event has been very well attended by our YMCA senior participants and by the community at large. We are delighted to have BFMC join us to offer a larger variety of both screenings and exhibits.”

YMCA staff will administer the functional fitness assessment. The assessment includes six elements: lower body strength, upper body strength, aerobic endurance, lower body flexibility, upper body flexibility and agility and balance.

Hospital staff will focus on stroke prevention and recognition. Emergency medical personnel and nurses will be on hand to discuss the benefits of calling for emergency medical help at the earliest stages of stroke symptoms and how to recognize signs of a stroke.

Along with many vendors, the Senior Health Fair will also include massage, Reiki, aromatherapy, oral and foot health information, blood pressure screenings, bone density screenings and hearing testing by Avada.

There is no charge and it is open to YMCA members and the general public. Advance registration is encouraged; for more information or to register, call 413-773-3646, ext. 448, or register at the YMCA Welcome Center.
