Letter: Neighborhood change

It was quite disturbing to read in Saturday’s paper that we will now have a homeless shelter placed directly across from the building where we live, The Mill House Apartments. To have the mayor state plainly that because it is a nonprofit project, town zoning laws do not apply surely did not fill anyone with confidence. No wonder we’d not read of any objections by the abutters ... no one had been notified of this plan.

That being said, the statement that “the Mill House is apartments for the elderly” is not true. If anyone would take time to read the ad (there’s one in today’s Recorder) that runs regularly, this building is for “professionals, families and retirees.” Indeed, many of us who live here are “elderly,” having sold our large homes, making the choice to shift to apartment living. We pay upmarket rent each month to live in a very pleasant, well-cared-for place — and there is no “Senior Discount.” The rents are set by the company and everyone is bound by them.

It is to be hoped that this will continue to be a pleasant place in a quiet neighborhood.
