Ruddock shuts down Turners
Ben Ruddock spun a complete game four-hitter and Frontier Regional School retained a share for the Hampshire League lead with a 3-1 win over Turners Falls High School in baseball action Friday at Valiton Field in South Deerfield.
Ruddock received all of his offensive support in the first two innings.
The Red Hawks (13-4 overall, 11-2 HL) scored once in the first when Sean Doyle reached second base on a throwing error and scored on Rylan Baronas’ line single to right-center field.
In the second, Eddie Tsai and Jared Allis hit back-to-back singles, Allis stole second and Tim Hoar walked to load the bases. Niko Ames’ fielder’s choice plated Tsai, then Doyle roped a single to right-center that got Allis hometo make it a 3-0 game.
Turners (12-5, 9-4 HL) got one back in the third when Kramer Patenaude singled and later scored on Ryan Wilder’s two-out triple to the right-center gap.
Ruddock took over from there, at one point retiring 10 batters in a row from the fourth to the seventh innings. He surrendered just four hits and one walk while striking out eight.
Baronas finished with two hits, as did Patenaude.
Tyler Charboneau fanned three and walked one in the complete-game loss.
Greenfield 8, Pioneer 3 — Greenfield High School scored six times in the fourth inning to erase a 2-0 deficit and went on to beat Pioneer Valley Regional School, 8-3, in a HL baseball contest Friday night at Veterans Memorial Field in Greenfield.
The Green Wave (14-3, 11-2 HL) used five hits, a walk and two Panther errors to grab a 6-2 lead. Pioneer did get one back in the sixth, but Greenfield padded its lead with two in the bottom of the frame.
Jale Elwell led the Wave offense with three hits, while Drew Barisano added a single and double.
Ryan Wagner led the Panthers with a single, triple and an RBI.
Barisano worked the first 5 1-3 innings to earn the win.
Jake Hale took the loss.
Easthampton 2, Athol 1 (8) — Chris Starcun singled home Shy Torres with the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning to help Easthamptron High School edge Athol High School, 2-1, in an HL contest Friday in Easthampton.
The Red Raiders (7-10, 5-8) must win their final three games to qualify for postseason play.
Starcun earned the win with eight innings of four-hit ball, striking out one and walking one.
Dakota Melanson hit an RBI double in the third inning to plate the lone Athol run, but Easthampton tied the game in the sixth inning on an RBI double by Zach Lewis.
Garrett Hall suffered the loss with five strikeouts and two walks in 7 1-3 innings.
Hopkins 7, Mohawk 2 — Hopkins Academy shot a dagger into Mohawk Trail Regional High School’s postseason hopes with a 7-2 HL baseball victory Friday in Hadley.
The Warriors (6-10) must win their final four games in order to qualify for the postseason.
Hopkins scored six times in the third inning to erase a 2-0 deficit. Tim Knightly and Sean Quill each finished with one hit and two RBIs in the win. Knightly struck out seven to earn the complete-game victory.
Sam Slowinski had one hit and two RBIs for Mohawk. Ryan Pease struck out four in 3 2-3 innings in the losing effort.
