Stone an Open sectional qualifier at Crump’

Former Deerfield resident Hunter Stone was one of five players who qualified for the sectionals Wednesday during the U.S. Open Local Qualifying Round at Crumpin-Fox Club in Bernardston.

Stone, who opened his round on No. 10 with a four-putt double-bogey, recovered and finished in a tie for fourth with Jeffrey Dantas of Seekonk, Chris Houston of Guilford, N.H., and Jason Thresher of West Suffield, Conn., at even-par 72.

With only qualifying spots remaining to fill, the foursome went out for the playoff and Dantas immediately birdied the 10th hole to earn his spot, while Jason Thresher bogeyed the par-4 and wound up as the second alternate.

Stone and Houston went to the par-3 11th, where Stone earned the final qualifying spot by knocking his tee shot to within 10 feet and sinking the birdie putt. Houston settled for first alternate.

Jesse Smith of Barrington, N.H., was the best of the 79 players who started, as he rode eight birdies to a 3-under 69 and medalist honors on the 7,023-yard, par 72 layout.

Joe Depanfilis or Naples, Fla., and Jonathan Brisbane of Killington, Vt., both tied for second at 71.

Stone, who recently turned pro, will now head to Purchase, N.Y., on June 3 to play in the 36-hole sectional qualifying round at both Century Country Club and Old Oaks Country Club, which will determine who earns spots in the U.S. Open, which will be held at prestigious Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa.

Yale-bound James Park of Deerfield Academy carded a 75, while Nate Adelson of South Deerfield and Greenfield native Josh Hillman, head pro at Taconic Golf Club in Williamstown, each shot 81.
