Heard retains Wendell Selectboard seat
WENDELL — Christine Heard will return to the Selectboard seat she has held since 1998.
Voters returned Heard, of 149 Wendell Depot Road, to office for a three-year term with 202 votes, versus 77 cast for rival Nancy “Nan” Riebschlaeger of 74 Lockes Village Road.
According to Town Clerk Gretchen Smith, 284 voters or 43 percent of the voting population turned out Monday.
There were no other races on the ballot, but there were two vacancies without candidates: one partial three-year term on the Planning Board and one full five-year term on the same board. Write-ins filled these positions, but must still accept.
Thirty voters wrote in Alia Kusmaul for the three-year seat, Marianne Sundell had 21 write-in votes and all others totalled 16. Smith said she contacted Kusmaul and she is considering accepting the seat.
Kelli Clemins won the five-year seat as a write-in with 81 votes, compared to 5 cast for other write-ins. Smith said late Monday night she had not contacted Clemins, but Clemins had made a public announcement she intended to run a day or two previously and had campaigned with printed ballot labels.
