Hall’s single rescues Raiders
Garrett Hall’s RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning helped lift Athol High School past Mahar Regional School, 3-2, in a Hampshire League baseball game Saturday in Athol.
The game was tied in the bottom of the sixth and starters Dakota Melanson of Athol and Zack Adams of Mahar were locked in a pitcher’s duel. Adams retired Bradley Bousquet for the first out of the sixth, but Melanson came up and reached on an error by Mahar shortstop Hunter Richardson. Adams came back to strike out Athol’s Joey Adams for the second out of the inning, but Hall saved it for the hosts when he singled to drive home Melanson with the go-ahead run. The Red Raiders wound up scoring all three of their runs on two-out singles in the win.
That was all Melanson needed as he finished off the complete-game victory and finished with eight strikeouts, while allowing five hits and four walks. The win moves Athol (4-2 overall, 3-0 HL) into a first-place tie with Greenfield High School and Frontier Regional School atop the HL.
Melanson staked the Red Raiders to a 1-0 lead in the second inning when he led off with a single to left and then scored on Jamie Posk’s two-out single up the middle. Athol added a second run in the third inning when Jake LaPointe led off with a walk and scored on Bousquet’s two-out single up the middle.
Mahar (3-3, 2-3 HL) came back to tie the score with a pair in the top of the fourth. Buddy Boatwright walked to lead off and scored when Logan Barrett roped a one-out double to left-center. Barrett would come around with the Senators’ second run on a two-out RBI single by Jake Paul.
Adams suffered the loss, striking out four with six hits and two walks.
Mahar hosts Turners Falls High School today at 3:30, while Athol travels to Hopkins Academy at 4.
