Greenfield issues leaf disposal options

GREENFIELD — The following are the options for disposing of leaves in Greenfield:

They may be brought to the transfer station compost pile without charge to Greenfield residents. Leaves must be loose or in compostable paper bags. If brought in plastic bags, they must be emptied and the bags must be taken.

Leaves, which must be placed in front of the house, may be picked up curbside for a prepaid fee of $7 for up to 20 compostable paper bags (30-gallon).

Residents must call to schedule a pickup. Curbside collection will happen on Fridays by appointment from Friday through Nov. 16.

Residents may start their own leaf composting pile in their backyards.

It is a violation of town bylaws to rake or blow leaves onto the tree belt or into the street, as the leaves can plug storm drains and cause drainage problems during storms.

Transfer Station hours are: Tuesday and Wednesday from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m., Thursday and Friday from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

For more information or to schedule a pickup, call the Greenfield Department of Public Works at 413-772-1528.

To obtain the Home Composting Guide, call the DPW or visit: www.greenfield-ma.gov.

Compost bins are available at the transfer station for $40.
