GHS Principal Woodcock honored for youth support

GREENFIELD — For setting a positive example for her students, Greenfield High School Principal Donna Woodcock has received the Mike Fritz Community Builder Award.

The Communities That Care Coalition granted her the honor Friday.

Woodcock, a Greenfield High alumna, has taught health/physical education in Greenfield schools for the past three decades. She became the high school principal in 2008.

She is an active member of the Greenfield’s Safe School-Smart Schools Coalition — an organization that recently received a drug-free communities grant, which will help to decrease risk behaviors among Greenfield teens.

And as the school principal, she helps create a supportive environment for her students, said Rachel Stoler, leader of the Communities That Care Coalition’s youth recognition workgroup.

“If you’ve been to Greenfield High school lately, it’s a very positive environment with a lot of adults that demonstrate on a regular basis that they really care about our youth,” said Stoler. “(Woodcock) makes sure that young people in her school are recognized, not just for academic and sports achievements, but for everything.”

Woodcock thanked her parents and the school’s faculty for providing her with support.

“It’s all the people at the school that make this happen, not me,” she said. “It’s exciting to work with great people. I’m excited about the new prospects of the (drug-free) grant that we’re going to have.”

The Mike Fritz Community Builder Award is presented during each coalition meeting to an individual who helps support youth and community development.

It is named after Fritz, a local businessman who helped start the coalition in 2002.
