GREENFIELD — The town may swap a small piece of land for another with a local business on French King Highway, a deal that would provide the town with better access to future park land.

Under the deal negotiated by Mayor William Martin, the town would receive a little more than an acre from Lodge Tire and in return would give Lodge an even smaller piece so that it can install a septic system.

Martin said the town owns 50 acres on the mountain above. In the past, the town has talked about what might become of that 50 acres. “The acre has frontage onto French King Highway,” he said. “That means it could become the entryway to whatever we decided to do there or it could be a parking lot or something else.”

One idea Martin shared with the public more than a year ago was to turn the 50 acres into a park that would include trails along the mountain, and the mayor talked about even building some sort of outdoor theater there.

Martin said the idea is currently on the town’s back burner, because there are many other projects that must be completed first. But, he said, he would like to revisit it down the road.

He said owning the acre adjacent to Lodge Tire would be good, because the town could eventually use it as part of whatever it decides to do with the 50 acres.

Town Council will need to approve the transaction before it becomes final.
