Letter: Remember these lines
I applaud our governor, Deval Patrick, for choosing to offer temporary shelter to undocumented children from central America. Those who disagree, and all those Washington politicians who have been avoiding a review of our nation’s immigration policies, might want to recall Emma Lazarus’ poem on our Statue Of Liberty:
“Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door.”
Gov. Patrick clearly wants to keep the fundamental promise expressed in these few lines. Perhaps others would prefer replacing Lazarus’s lines with a simple “No Trespassing! Keep Out!”
