Ludlow drops Post 81, 8-3
Eight errors proved far too much for Greenfield Post 81 to overcome Monday night when Ludlow took an 8-3 American Legion Baseball victory at Veterans Memorial Field in Greenfield.
It has been a tough three-game stretch for the Post 81 (7-2) defense, which has committed 16 errors in three games and has been fortunate to go 2-1 in that stretch. Monday’s miscues finally caught up with the team.
“It’s a little bit of moving guys out of position but also a little lack of focus,” Greenfield coach Tim Capuano said of the mistakes. “We made one and it just really spiraled out of control. But we are going to hit it hard tomorrow, get back to practice and sort it out.”
Ludlow led 4-0 but Greenfield scored three times in the fifth to pull to within a run. More errors in the final two innings helped Ludlow pull away.
Alex Lafayette singled and drove in two runs in the win, Dylan Presnal finished with three hits, Brett Laymen singled, tripled and drove in a run, and John Bortolucci picked up two hits and one RBI. Connor Duquette (two hits) earned the win.
Nick York struck out one and walked three in 52/ 3 innings in the loss. Mark Buck hit a two-run single in the game, and Jake Elwell singled and stole home as part of a double-steal.

Carey scored again in the third by doubling, advancing to third on a wild pitch and scoring on Blanchard’s sac fly to short center field, which the shortstop caught running away from the infield.
Brad Bean made it 3-0 in the fourth when he singled, stole second and scored on an overthrow misplayed by the back-up center fielder.
Platner scored the final run in the sixth when he was hit by a pitch, stole second and third, and scored when the throw to third sailed into left field.
