Letter: Tennis stars
I have just returned from an end-of-the-year party for the Greenfield High School tennis teams and feel compelled to tell the town and the world what wonderful young people live in our community. These scholar-athletes represent all that is right with our world — they are hardworking, intelligent, resourceful, respectful, courteous, good-humored and great fun to be around, and it is an honor to be called “Coach” by them.
I retired from coaching five years ago but decided to return when the opportunity arose. It was one of the best decisions I have ever made; I got to be around these terrific folks for the past three years, and was reminded daily how lucky I was to be in the right place at the right time. Each young woman I have coached over the years has been a unique individual and a true joy and the teams of these last three years have been the “icing on the cake” of my career.
So I’d like to take this opportunity to say thank you to the girls (and boys) of the 2012, 2013 and 2014 Greenfield tennis teams and especially to wish the seniors all of the good fortune they so truly deserve in their futures. You have made each spring a season of fun and enjoyment for me. I hope you keep playing and laughing and winning and remember that tennis is a great metaphor for life — the point you are in is the one that counts most, and preparation and follow through will help you continue to be the champions that you are.
