Jordana Harper-Ewert signs Greenfield superintendent contract

GREENFIELD — Jordana Harper-Ewert signed a three-year contract with the Greenfield School Committee on Wednesday and will officially take over as school superintendent on July 1.

The school board will pay her $135,000 in the first year. It has agreed to pay her $138,000 the next year and $141,000 the year, if she receives high enough performance evaluation ratings.

The school department has been paying $120,000 out of its general fund toward retiring Superintendent Susan Hollins’ salary, in addition to up to $30,000 in grants.

Harper-Ewert, 32, is the chief schools officer in Springfield and this will be her first superintendent post. After signing the contract, she thanked the School Committee and told members she was looking forward to starting the job.

The school board will pay for Harper-Ewert to participate in a state superintendent induction program.

Hollins, who has led the department since 2008, will also provide 40 hours of consulting services to Harper-Ewert during the first two weeks of July. She may provide more consulting in August.

The School Committee will evaluate Harper-Ewert each year using the state’s yearlong superintendent process. The rating “needs improvement” shall be equal to “proficient” during the first two evaluations.

The contract does not include a residency requirement. Harper-Ewert lives in Amherst.
