YMCA open house on Monday

The Greenfield YMCA has planned an open house for seniors on Monday , from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be classes to sample, tours, health screenings, presentations and door prizes.

Jayne Trosin, YMCA fitness director, said, “The YMCA has put together a whole host of classes and programs geared for seniors and new exercisers. Our group exercise classes start with our Silver Sneakers program, a chair fitness class, Tai Chi or gently yoga and then increase in energy intensity. We have many seniors who take our Group Active classes which are a 55-minute class with the four components of fitness; strength, cardio, flexibility and balance. For people with joint issues our Y offers several levels of water fitness classes as well.”

Dawn Dorsey, YMCA health and wellness director, said “The senior population is projected to double in the next 15 years in Franklin County ... The Y has programs to help seniors ‘age in place’ in their own homes for as long as possible and strength training three days a week is the foundation of aging in place.”

Trosin added “On March 17 seniors can sample four Group Ex classes, tour the Nautilus Center and First Step Fitness room, have their blood pressure checked and bone density tested and listen to information presentations on volunteering opportunities, free home care offerings for seniors, and tips for personal organization. There will be a belly dancing demonstration from 11:30 to noon.

Dorsey added “People shouldn’t let money be the reason for not joining the YMCA. We have a sliding fee scale which is based on household gross income and can cover up to 70 percent of the membership fee. A Senior Silver membership costs between $11.20 and $37.25 a month depending on where they fall on the scale.

This one membership fee covers all “land” classes, plus use of the weight room, cardio room, the First Step Fitness Program, lap swimming and Jacuzzi. In addition many insurance companies have a $150 per year membership rebate program.”
