Annual Montague census mailed

MONTAGUE — The annual town census forms used to compile the town street list, to calculate state aid and for other purposes were mailed Jan. 23.

The Board of Registrars is required by law to verify and update the name, address, age and occupation of all residents. Census responses are used as proof of residency to protect voter rights, veterans’ bonuses, to assist the Council on Aging with service projections and to assist the school with enrollment information and projections, and population figures are also used by the state in calculating state and federal aid to the town.

The street list is made available to the police, fire and emergency medical services to aid in the daily performance of their duties, and to other municipal departments, according to the town clerk’s office.

Census information about children under the age of 17 is not made available to the public, and birthdates of residents are not published due to the threat of identity theft.

The Board of Registrars is required by law to move registered voters who do not respond to the census to the inactive voter list, with a risk of removal from the voter registration rolls.

Residents who did not receive a form may download one from the town website, www.montague.net, or call the clerk’s office at 413-863-3200, ext. 203 for a mailing. Completed forms are to be mailed or delivered to the town clerk at 1 Ave. A, Turners Falls, MA 01376.

Montague tax and sewer bills mailed

MONTAGUE — The Fiscal year 2014 real estate and district tax bills and the sewer-use bills were mailed on Jan. 23.

The tax payments are due on or before May 1, the sewer bills are due on or before March 6.

To obtain a receipted bill, enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope and both copies of the bill with your payment. Any new owner not in receipt of a tax bill should contact the tax collectors’ office at 413-863-3200, ext. 202.

The office is open Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., open until 6:30 p.m. Wednesdays. The Town Hall is closed on Fridays.

Residents may also pay any current real estate, district and sewer bill online at www.montague.net by selecting the “Online Services” tab and following the instructions.

Real estate abatement and exemption applications are available from the assessors office. Abatement applications must be filed on or before May 1.

Nomination papers available

MONTAGUE — Nomination papers for the annual town election are available at the town clerk’s office until March 27.

They must be returned no later than 5 p.m. March 31. To get on the ballot, potential candidates for townwide offices must obtain the signatures of 30 registered town voters. Potential town meeting members must obtain 10 signatures from registered voters of their home precinct.

The Board of Selectmen, Board of Assessors, Board of Health and Recreation Commission each have an opening for a three-year term.

The Board of Library Trustees has three positions open, each for a three-year term.

The Soldier’s Memorial Trustees have two positions open, veteran and nonveteran, each for a three-year term.

The Montague Housing Authority has one position open for a five-year term.

Town meeting members, the district representatives allowed to vote at town meetings, are needed for all precincts.

The annual town election will be held on May 19 with polls open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. The deadline to register to vote is April 29.

The clerk’s office is open Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and until 6:30 p.m. on Wednesdays. Town Hall is closed on Fridays.
