YMCA Girls Day Out Jan. 26
GREENFIELD — The annual YMCA Girls Day Out is back, and it’s bigger this year. On Sunday, from noon to 3 p.m. the YMCA is holding the free event for “girls ages 10 to 100.”
Dawn Dorsey, YMCA health and wellness director, said, “Girls, women, mothers and grandmothers of all ages are invited to come and pamper themselves this Sunday. Participants can try a variety of group exercise classes, including Hooping, Zumba, Core Bar, Kick Aerobics and Yoga. Adult girls over 15 can soak in the jacuzzi, lap swim, have a free chair massage and try cardio machines or the weight room. Those over 12 can try scuba at 2.
Jayne Trosin, fitness director, said, “Forty-five local vendors who specialize in products and services important to women will be present. Some of the products are: jewelry, beading, cookware, make-up, nails, cooking, handbags and candles. Chefs from Taylor’s, Hope & Olive and Smithsonian will be presenting healthy dishes. Home Depot will be teaching simple home repairs .
Bob Sunderland, executive director, said, “2014 is the 125th year of the YMCA programming in Franklin County. Each of the next 12 months we will be holding special events to highlight those 125 years. The first 125 women at Girls Day Out will be able to register for a special gift basket worth over $125. When the Y movement began in 1844 in London, it was just for men, but women became involved in Y-USA efforts as early as the Civil War. Today 56 percent of the members at our YMCA are females.”
Girls ages 10 to 14 must be with an adult female relative or guardian. The Game Room/Kid Fit Center will be available for free supervised play for boys and girls 6 to 14. The Kid Fit Center has Wii and strength and cardio machines so kids can get regular exercise.
Dorsey said, “Women spend so much time taking care of others, they put their own needs on the back burner. This event is designed to show women that exercise/wellness is fun, they can take the time to do it, and they will be comfortable at the YMCA regardless of their age, ability or body type. Our YMCA makes it easy for mothers to exercise because they can bring their children to the Y at the same time for their own programs, exercise, or to play in our Game Room/Kid Fit Center. Our Y also has a wonderful low-cost babysitting program for infants to 5 year olds. Because their children are taken care of, moms can relax and do their own workouts in the same trip to the Y, saving time and gas.”
