Wave starts fast, drops Raiders

Greenfield High School bolted out to a 16-point lead after one quarter, extended it to 22 by halftime and cruised to a 58-32 Hampshire League victory over Athol High School in boys’ basketball action Friday night at Mallet Gymnasium in Athol.

Nine players reached the scoring column for Greenfield (5-2 overall, 4-0 HL), topped by Connor Eckstrom’s 16 points. Parker Hickey and Garrett Hudson each bucketed 8 points, and Tim Cooley and Vincent Funari tossed in 7 apiece.

Jerry Parker led the Red Raiders (1-5, 1-4 HL) with 8 points, followed by Andrew Poor with 6.

Greenfield hosts Mahar Regional School on Monday night at 7:30.

Smith Academy 66, Pioneer 47 — Derek McMahon netted a game-high 20 points to lead Smith Academy to a 66-47 victory over Pioneer Valley Regional School in a Hampshire League boys’ basketball game Friday night at Webb Gymnasium in Hatfield.

Keith Natale finished with 15 points for the Falcons (5-1, 2-0 HL), who led 33-26 at the half and upped their advantage to 49-35 after three quarters. Austin Rogers, Christian Smiarowski and David Longstreeth all contributed 9 points to spread the offense around.

Pioneer (3-3, 2-2) had three players reach double figures, led by Lennon Robichaud with 19. Lee Doiron drained a quartet of 3-pointers en eroute to a 12-point effort, and Brad Hastings chipped in with 10.

“They may have the best point guard (McMahon) and big man (Natale) in the league,” said Panther head coach Dave Hastings. “(McMahon) is super smart. He makes a lot of the right decisions, and puts the ball where it needs to go.”

Pioneer travels to Mohawk Trail Regional High School on Tuesday night at 7.


NMH falls in Cushing finale

Gunnery School scored an empty-net goal in the final minute to finish off a 5-3 win over Northfield Mount Hermon School in the championship game of the Cushing New Year’s Boys’ Hockey Tournament on Friday in Ashburnham.

Jordan Dow, Bradley Allen and Kevin Dazkevich all tallied goals for the Hoggers (10-5-1 overall), while Kyle Redmond made 41 saves in goal.

Dow and Dazkevich were also named to the All-Tournament team.

NMH travels to Sheffield on Wednesday to face Berkshire School at 3:30 p.m.
