Letter: Mandela’s path
Nelson Mandela became a voice for those who had no voice. His struggle for the right thing evolved as his voice became stronger. The revolution he led was always about the people and the right thing. The fight and the healing were equally important. He was not reinvented or defeated. He led the revolution were it needed to go, from the physical to the spiritual. Much like his fellow “icons” (such as Gandhi and King,) his actions initially were not intended to affect anything beyond the borders of his own country. They were recognized as genuine leaders by the world for who and what they were and how they did what they did. That a recent My Turn column wanted a different Mandela to grace this planet, and belittle the one we had, is a shame.
