GREENFIELD — The driver of a Subaru involved in a collision with a Greenfield Police cruiser on High Street Sunday night was transported to a Springfield hospital and remains in critical condition.

According to Mary Carey, spokeswoman for the Northwest District Attorney’s Office, the passenger in the four-door Subaru sedan was also taken to Baystate Medical Center. The police officer was treated at Baystate Franklin Medical Center.

Carey said the cruiser was traveling southbound toward the intersection of High and Sanderson Streets near the hospital shortly after 8 p.m., and the Subaru was traveling westbound on Sanderson Street, when the two vehicles collided, sending them off the roadway.

At the scene, the intersection was strewn with glass and car parts as the Subaru came to rest in the front yard of 146 High St., just south of the intersection. The police cruiser, an SUV, ended up farther south on the same yard.

The passenger of the Subaru was trapped in the vehicle and had to be extricated by Greenfield firefighters and Emergency Medical Technicians before being wheeled on a stretcher directly to the hospital.

High Street was closed at the intersection with Sanderson Street.

The collision is being investigated by Massachusetts State Police Detectives Unit assigned to the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office, the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section (“CARS”), and the Massachusetts State Police Crime Scene Services Section.
