The Northfield Mount Hermon School hockey team continued its hot start to the season on Wednesday with a 4-1 victory against Franklin County-rival Deerfield Academy at McCollum Arena in Gill.

The Hoggers improved to 3-1 on the season under third-year coach and former UMass hockey player Kevin Czepiel, who said he has been proud of the growth the program has continued to make.

“We had a pretty big jump last year and we are building on that,” he explained. “This is my second recruiting class and I’m excited to get more of a finger print on the team.”

NMH got the scoring started in the first period as its power play connected. Defenseman Mike Kennedy took a shot from the point that Kyle Kazeroid tipped in front of the net past Deerfield goalie Thomas Gale. The Hoggers doubled the lead late in the first period. Kazeroid and Kennedy set up Devan Tongue with 27 seconds left in the frame to send NMH into the first intermission up 2-0.

“It was huge for us to start with a 2-0 lead,” Czepiel said. “The previous three games we were pretty slow out of the gate. Today, they had a lot more jump and really took it to Deerfield from the puck drop.”

The teams played a scoreless second period and much of the third remained scoreless until a late flurry. The Big Green (1-1) cut the deficit in half with 5 minutes, 51 seconds to play when Milo Defay scored on an assist from Will Holland. Northfield Mount Hermon responded with a pair of goals 45 seconds apart to put the game out of reach. With 2:47 left in the third, Kazeroid scored his second goal of the game on assists from Tongue and Ben Stefanini, and with 2:02 remaining Jack Quinn used a nice individual effort to score an unassisted goal.

“This is a big step for our guys and a big confidence boost,” Czepiel said of beating the perennially strong Big Green team. “We kind of dominated play from beginning to end.”

NMH outshot its neighbor to the south, 32-24. Hogger goalie Eric Green finished with 23 saves to pick up the victory, while Gale — who is committed to play at Dartmouth University — made 28 saves in the loss.

NMH hosts Academie Saint Louis Saturday at noon at McCollum. Deerfield returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Choate Rosemary Hall at 3 p.m. at Eaglebrook School in Deerfield.
