GREENFIELD — The district chief of Greenfield Fire Department’s Call Force has been honored with a national award for fire prevention.

District Chief Michael Swain, who is also the Fire Prevention Services supervisor at the University of Massachusetts, has received the Glenn A. Gaines Excellence in Fire Prevention award. The award recognizes effective fire safety education through program development, delivery, organization and creativity in an effort to reduce the number of fires on campus and in off-campus student housing.

“He received that for not only the work he did as the campus fire marshal, but in recognition of his 30 years’ dedication to the city of Greenfield,” Fire Chief Robert Strahan said at a recent Town Council meeting.

“He has a huge job for keeping people safe and enforcing codes and regulations, and he is a very valued member of our department,” Strahan said.

The town’s Public Safety Commission presented Swain with a certificate of achievement for his work in fire prevention and education, and Town Council President Brickett Allis read him a citation from the council and presented him with a certificate of accomplishment.
