TURNERS FALLS — Organizers of the inaugural Northeast Unity Car Show are prepared to have hundreds of automotive enthusiasts park their sweetest rides along First Street on Sunday.

The show, put together by Rachel Levey, her husband Nick Kramarczyk and veteran car show organizers Derek Benoit and Josh Petith, will be an all-day affair starting at 10 a.m. Collectors are invited to bring Volkswagen and Audi cars of any vintage, as well as European or vintage bikes. Adding to the event’s ambiance will be food trucks, vendors and service booths for automotive enthusiasts.

Levey described the event as an evolution of monthly “little get-togethers” that she and Kramarczyk would host near Nova Motorcycles beside Unity Park last year, each of which featured about 20 cars. By Monday’s registration deadline, six times as many vehicles had registered for the Northeast Unity Car Show.

“I would love for there to be around 200 people there,” Levey said.

Organizers aim for the show to be a bonding opportunity for Volkswagen and Audi owners in particular. She likened the Volkswagen/Audi community to a “close-knit group of friends with a variety of interests and walks of life” brought together by vehicle designs that “always felt user-friendly.”

“They’re very accessible when it comes to working on them, and I feel like, especially in the ’80s and ’90s, there were a lot of different trim packages and lights and front ends,” Levey said. “They’re easy to work on and they’re fun to work on. … It’s almost a form of self-expression, an art form or sculpture or whatever.”

Prior to the show, a series of “casual hangs” will be held throughout downtown Turners Falls on Saturday. The first event will be a short “scenic cruise” at 4 p.m. departing from the Food City parking lot and ending at Sadie’s Bikes. Immediately following will be a “pre-meet get-together” at Sadie’s Bikes where drivers can park along the canal across from the shop, partake in a custom bike “petting zoo” and enjoy sweet treats from Nice. Snack Parlor. Finally, local band Jimmy Just Quit will play an outdoor concert behind Pioneer Valley Brewery on Third Street at 6:30 p.m.

First Street will be closed to vehicular traffic from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m. for the show on Sunday. Gates will open to show cars at 10 a.m. Vehicle owners, who can receive awards in nine categories, are advised to enter via L Street. Registration costs $30.

Refreshments will be available via Nice. Snack Parlor, Holyoke Hummus, El Sotano and Victoria Coffee Co. Vendors, including automotive specialists providing dent removal, car tuning and more, will also be present. At 3 p.m., there will be a raffle to benefit Foundation Blue, a Rhode Island-based nonprofit supporting students going to school to be auto mechanics.

“Come hang out and walk around,” Levey encouraged, noting that the event is free for spectators. “I hope people just come to check it out, even if they don’t have a car.”

The show is being organized in close partnership with RiverCulture, Nova Motorcycles and Nice. Snack Parlor. It also has more than 30 other sponsors.
